Here are a few memories I’ve carried for years—ones that didn’t make sense at the time, but do now. If you’re someone who’s questioning your own neurodivergence, maybe these will feel familiar.

I’m also sharing modern picture book pairings for a handful of the scenarios. I hope you find them helpful!

1995 maybe? Just classic me, hamming it up for a photo. Standing on a dining room chair looking away from the camera.

🌀 The Moment: I was in Spanish class in college, and the professor asked us to turn in our paper. I had NO idea what he was talking about. I had been in class every day. I just... missed it.

🧠 What I See Now: I now know this was working memory and filtering at play. My brain didn’t hold onto the repeated reminders, even though I was physically present. That kind of cognitive gap was invisible, but real.

🌀 The Moment: I would occasionally get lectured for talking in class. I told my mom, “Sometimes a girl’s just gotta talk.”
